About Us
Part of the Ralmax Group of Companies, United Engineering is a locally owned, full-service fabrication and machine shop operating in Victoria and Sidney, B.C.
We have been in business since 1921. This says a lot about the consistent quality of our work, our commitment to innovation and modernization, and the priority we place on our long-term client and supplier relationships.
Our reputation for performance excellence is underpinned by several key success factors. These include our experience, the size and versatility of our operations and our direct access to deep, protected waters that allow for convenient and cost-effective barge transportation of completed projects. Our team of skilled employees is comprised of precision craftspeople who take in their work and our clients’ success. We have the people, the facilities and the tools needed to build and transport large-scale fabrication projects to your destination.
Our word counts and our handshake matters!

Our history is important
It is a reflection of our values; it speaks to where we came from and shapes who we are today. UEL is a proud to honour the legacies of the local family businesses that, over time, have become part of United Engineering, and our parent company, the Ralmax Group.
UEL opens its doors as a small repair and service shop.
UEL experiences growth as it services the war efforts.
UEL provides services to support the burgeoning forest sector – logging, sawmills and pulp mills.
UEL branches out adding structural steel fabrication to its services in response to new market opportunities.
UEL relocates to Harbour Road on Victoria harbour, a strategic move to allow for direct water access for barge transportation. Several large capacity machines are added to the shop to bolster UEL’s scope of services. New markets in marine repair and marine construction are established.
UEL adds CNC burning table to its operations and begins to stockpile steel inventory to augment shearing, forming and heavy plate fabrication.
UEL is acquired by the Ralmax Group
UEL acquires Harjim – Harry and Jim’s machine shop – one of Victoria’s largest structural steel metal shops. Harjim becomes a division of UEL moving from Rock Bay into the Harbour Road location.
Ralmax purchases Ramsay Machine Works in Sidney, expanding its fabrication capacity and expertise and opening up new water access points at Patricia Bay for barging capabilities.
United Engineering continues to reinvest profits into technology and equipment upgrades, as well as in trades training apprenticeship opportunities for employees.
